This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
