In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
